SMYL CC is a challenging but immensely rewarding environment in which to work. At its best it’s a lot of fun, very exciting and personally fulfilling. In its challenging moments it’s confronting and emotionally draining. However, the small team of staff support each other and work as a team to problem solve and find solutions to the range of issues we face as we seek to help our students to become happy and useful members of society.
The design principles of Big Picture Education underpin the College’s personalised approach to students, both in and out of the classroom. This means that all staff must be involved in respectful, high expectation relationships with students and with their families.
Students at the College are expected to commit to their learning – and so are staff. The College provides many opportunities for all staff to develop their skills individually and as a group. Professional learning includes opportunities to develop the specific skills associated with your role and also focuses on skills that are needed to help us all to better understand and support the students with whom we are working.
Employment conditions at the College are underpinned by the Federal Awards Educational Services (Schools) General Award or Educational Services (Schools) Teachers Award and salaries are aligned to those being paid by the WA Department of Education. Whilst the base salary will not match an Education Department salary, as a not for profit organisation, SMYL can offer its employees an Employee Benefit program that provides a salary supplement.
Please do not hesitate to ring the College to speak to the principal or to request a tour of the classrooms and associated spaces to get a better feel for what we do and what it might be like to work with us.
